The sale of e-rickshaws and e-rickshaw as a medium of transport for people as well as materials is on the rise. While this popularity of e-rickshaw has resulted in an expansion of vehicle sales, there are still some shortcomings of the EV and its sector in India.
Sodyco believes that acknowledging these problems can be a leading step toward change in the system.
Sodyco is an E-Rickshaw brand based in West Bengal. Our e-rickshaws are ICAT-approved. With 12+ years of experience, we have developed a huge name for ourselves in the EV sector of India.
Without further ado, let’s learn about some of India’s biggest challenges with e-rickshaws.
- No Manufacturing in India
One of the main problems with e-rickshaws is that they are not manufactured in India. The e-rickshaws in India are simply assembled in India with the parts made locally or imported cheaply.
- Cheap Material Used

Neither do assemblers invest in high-quality materials for the assembling of e-rickshaws nor do they give them a robust chassis. Such negligence on the assemblers’ behalf seriously compromises the quality of the e-rickshaw.
- Lack of regulation
There is an overall lack of regulation among e-rickshaw drivers. They carry over the prescribed limit of passengers which is dangerous to both the driver as well as the passengers. Such a problem also affects the battery life which in turn affects the life of the vehicle. Over speeding is another problem that adds to the list.
Some of the drivers don’t even have a driving license required to be driving the vehicle.
- Scary Loan Interest Rates
Most of the people who drive e-rickshaws belong to the lower economic sections of society. In order to buy a vehicle to earn a livelihood, they often turn to formal and informal institutions for loans. But both of these, charge them a heavy interest rate which potentially makes their financial situations worse than before.
Way Forward
The above-mentioned are the biggest challenges of e-rickshaws in India. It would be wrong to assume that nothing is being done to solve these issues however since the problem is a large scale, reforming and rectifying the situation will take some time.
Sodyco’s aim in such a situation is to be an ethical e-rickshaw brand, one which cares not only about those driving the e-rickshaws but also those riding it. We are actively working towards bettering the situation by providing high-quality and genuine spare parts, prompt after-sales service, finance, and insurance facilities for our buyers.
